Why Bother Having Children?

Why Bother Having Children?

Why do so many parents have children then as soon as they can shove them in a Nursery. then they go to school till their 18 then hopefully start work/leave home? Where are the family values etc of raising a family?
I despair.
To me this is the root of ALL society's problems now. We have no Family unit, we don't "care" for each other. We are isolated, just me, me, me. Parents spend all their time on iPADs or phones, I know a teacher who had to ask a parent at parent's evening to "stop using the phone" (she was texting) while he was talking about her daughter. She gave him mouth full of abuse and left.

Money isn't everything, I know its important and essential to a good healthy life but what's wrong with prioritising your Children first? We did. Sacrifice when they're young and teach them your values etc. the benefits will come later.

Look at this letter written to BBC news , highlighted by MHMT

Dear Sir/Madam, I have been married for nearly 18 years and we have 3 children aged 13, 11 and 9. When we got married we bought our house with the intention that we would be able to pay the mortgage on one salary so that I wouldn't have to work if we had children. I do work, thankfully I managed to secure a permanent part time job as a Community Paediatrician in my local hospital. I chose not to continue my training to become a consultant as the hours I would have had to work would have meant barely seeing my children!
My children did attend childcare when they were pre school age - for up to 2 days a week which they loved but those hours were more than enough and they were exhausted after those days!
As they have got older and attended school I have been very fortunate to be able to work fairly flexibly and have my mum nearby to do school pick ups if I can't.
As my children have got older they need me more rather than less and I tend to come home from work earlier than I did when they were younger. If my job had not been so flexible and I had felt that it was impacting on my children I would have given it up. Money would have been tight but we would have managed.
I certainly would not ever consider more childcare regardless of how cheap or expensive it might be. My children need me.
I spend my days at work trying to pick up the pieces for children from chaotic broken homes and also from middle class homes where children never see their parents apart from the weekends!
Obviously some people have to work to make ends meet and not all children suffer negative effects of long hours of childcare. But why as a society can we not make it easier for parents to care for their own children instead of forcing them into the workplace and taking even more parents away from their children to care for other people's children!!
Let's think about what children need, not what the economy needs or what parents need! Our children are the economy and the society of the future so their needs are what is really important!
Thank you to the author of this letter from MAHM. Let's hope someone listens somewhere!

Apple iPhone iOS8 Upgrade - how to save space.

Apple iPhone iOS8 Upgrade - how to save space.

Having trouble installing the new iOS8? here's what to do

  1. Delete something - can you copy your photos to your Pc or at least some of them? and delete them.
  2. Download the iOS to your PC and install from there. Its the uncompressing of the iOS install files that needs the space it takes less than 2gb when installed so do it on your Pc and install on the phone.

The second option is definitely the simplest. Just connect your Apple device to your computer (Windows or Mac, doesn’t matter) and load up iTunes. First, you’ll need to check it's updated to the latest version: to do this go to Help > Check in the menu bar on Macs, or iTunes > Check on a PC.

Next, click on the Summary tab and simply click ‘Check for Update’. iOS 8 has been available now for at least half a day so it should have no problem finding and installing it – you just need an internet connection and a little patience.

Not all kids have Computers

You may know I'm passionate about education. It makes me angry when it is taken for granted that all kids have a computer and Broadband access. They don't.

Besides I know that most kids do their homework by Google, copy, and paste!
Do they learn anything? yes, how to search.

What happened to Books?

My teacher wife knows a plagurised piece of work and it goes in the bin!

So sometimes the kid with NO internet gets the best marks and has learned something.

This school in Bolton has given ALL its 800 pupils iPADs. WOW - £500 each - where has that money come from? There are schools where they are short of books and the roof still leaks - this is not just sour grapes. Lets have iPADs for all.

I bet many get "lost" or broken? Then what do they do?

Same old story the rich get richer and the dregs get trampled on. But Bolton isn't Hampshire so how are they doing it?

China? Better Learn Mandarin

Have you noticed where things are made these days? yes 9 out of ten seem to come from China.

You know this worries me to hell.

See, riots in Greece due to their economic woes and they blame Germany for bleeding them dry (actually it was more like a parent spoiling a child). Anyway I'm more worried about China.

The day will come when lest say the ships and planes stop coming from China to supply us with all these nice cheap goodies (iPADS and iPhones, TVs and gadgets). Then what do we do? We've no manufacturing here. Also what do we do when China decide because they've a monopoly (We've no manufacturing here.), they decide now that they don't need our western money, 'cos they've got it all (where do you thing the US and us get our money from at the moment? - loans from China), they either put the prices up and then we're all like Greece or they just stop bothering, and we're all like Namibia (who cares about them?).

SO OK just sit there playing with your Chinese gadgets, on your Chinese made TV on Chinese made furniture etc. etc.

Be really really worried about China.

Tesco Evolving

As a shopper and Tesco shareholder I'm pleased to see Tesco evolving. The days of the superstore are numbered
With the rise in fuel prices and when your Tesco is 20miles away it makes sense to shop online. It would cost £6 in diesel for the trip - much less than that for a delivery and no hassle/time shopping in the store.

As we all have smart phones/iPads/Computers you can shop anywhere anytime.

Why wander around a store looking.

Good old Tesco - keep it up - keep prices down..

PS - why are some things in store and not on-line?

Teaching kids programming

Kids today love their gadgets, computers and smartphones but do they understand how they work?

I agree it would be ideal to get children to understand how computers etc. work but it just is not going to happen. I also agree that we've got to embrace the information age and "social media" not fight it but children need to learn the discipline of frittering time away on Facebook and twitter. They do need to learn.

How? I know my 2 year old grand daughter can use an iPAD better than me to play games and watch Postman Pat but is she learning? Yes. Later on using the technology will be intuitive to her so then she can move on to learning. Its technological evolution. The teachers just haven't caught up.

Think, how would you explain Televison or the internet to Isambard Kingdom Brunel? Our most brilliant engineer of all time. He was building things with unheard of technology in his time. Even he couldn't explain how it worked he just DID IT!

That's what kids will do with new technolgy of the 21st century. Don't fight it, EMBRACE it.

Why can’t you make a phone call (or send an SMS) from an iPad?

More to the point why couldn’t this all be amalgamated into one phone bill (with bolt on users) just like adding mailboxes, and WHY do we actually need phone numbers? Do your friends call you 01533 654675? No, we all have email addresses, or Facebook names.

Anyone (as old as me) remember when phones had “ABC” “DEF” etc. on the numbers on the dial so you could do you STD dialling via the “Name” of the exchange? So why can’t we go to something similar? You type in “google” and it takes you to www.google.co.uk or “BBC news”, so we know that the internet is clever enough to use “names” when we all know it uses IP Addresses. So why not “Map” your email address (or dare I suggest Facebook name” ) to your Mobile phone via your BT/TalkTalk account.

So then when you want to call someone you just type in their “Name”.

Wow. This could be a true innovation. What do I know though – lets check in 10years time.

I am old enough to remember in the 80's when we still had 405 lines TV there was a very expensive thing called Prestel which gave your TV (very expensive) access to a "teletext" like service via a special phone connection (ISDN then), that was Interactive! Whoooo! At the time I predicted "everybody will one day be able to communicate to the world via their TV and receive TV on demand from the phone line" - was I right?
